Construction Technology may be a hot, busy, and noisy place to work, but tremendous things are being accomplished there. Residents, who can become apprentices at 12 or 13, and who begin earning minimum wage at 14, are learning new skills, earning money towards construction tools for each hour they work, and discovering the discipline within themselves which will aid them as they transition into the world outside the Home.

The quality of their work is so well thought of that the shop may be awarded a contract to build an estimated 15 lifeguard towers for Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach (part of Volusia County Beach Patrol). This would be a wonderful fundraising opportunity for the Children's Home! Right now the residents are building adult and pint-sized Adirondack chairs, gliders, loveseats and picnic tables for sale to visitors (see pictures and prices below).

Erika Kahle, 18 and a 16 month resident, works in the shop all day and is paid minimum wage as a helper to the Children’s Home. “It’s a great program and we work really hard,” she says. “I enjoy working with the kids.” Othal Wallace, a 4-year resident of the Home, used to do woodworking in high school and finds he “gets in the zone” when working in the shop. “I know Mr. Rick (Hervey) depends on me to cut the wood, and I don’t want to let him down.”
